Background of the Study
Leadership effectiveness is a critical determinant of organizational success, particularly in the telecommunication industry, which is characterized by rapid technological advancements, market competition, and regulatory pressures (Olawale & Hassan, 2024). Effective leadership fosters innovation, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction, thereby driving business growth.
MTN Nigeria and Glo Nigeria are two leading telecommunication firms competing for market share in Kano State. While both organizations have strong brand recognition, their leadership styles and strategic approaches differ. MTN Nigeria is recognized for its structured corporate governance and international best practices, whereas Glo Nigeria, a wholly indigenous company, is known for its flexible and adaptive leadership strategies (Adebayo & Salisu, 2023).
Despite the importance of leadership effectiveness in sustaining business performance, there is limited comparative research on how leadership practices influence operational success in the telecommunication sector. This study seeks to analyze and compare leadership effectiveness in MTN Nigeria and Glo Nigeria in Kano State.
Statement of the Problem
Leadership effectiveness plays a crucial role in navigating industry challenges, including regulatory compliance, technological disruptions, and customer expectations. However, telecommunication firms in Nigeria, including MTN and Glo, often struggle with leadership issues such as ineffective decision-making, resistance to change, and workforce engagement (Nwachukwu & Bello, 2024).
While existing studies have examined leadership styles in Nigeria, few have conducted a comparative analysis of how leadership effectiveness varies between multinational and indigenous telecommunication firms. This study aims to fill this gap by assessing the leadership strategies employed by MTN and Glo Nigeria in Kano State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To examine the leadership styles adopted by MTN Nigeria and Glo Nigeria in Kano State.
2. To assess the impact of leadership effectiveness on organizational performance in both companies.
3. To identify challenges affecting leadership effectiveness in MTN and Glo Nigeria.
Research Questions
1. What are the predominant leadership styles in MTN Nigeria and Glo Nigeria?
2. How does leadership effectiveness influence organizational performance in both companies?
3. What are the major leadership challenges faced by MTN and Glo Nigeria?
Research Hypotheses
1. There is a significant difference in leadership effectiveness between MTN Nigeria and Glo Nigeria.
2. Leadership effectiveness positively influences organizational performance in both companies.
3. Leadership challenges negatively impact business growth in MTN and Glo Nigeria.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on leadership effectiveness in MTN Nigeria and Glo Nigeria in Kano State. Limitations may include access to company-specific leadership data and variations in employee perceptions.
